Hat-trick of sport awards for Newcastle students

Three students from Newcastle University have been named Rising Stars by Sport Newcastle.
Rower Gemma Hall and swimmers Will Jolly and Jon Hill, were presented with the awards at a ceremony held at the Civic Centre earlier this month.

The awards are given to the next generation of young sports stars who either live in Newcastle or represent the city. Previous winners have included England rugby ace Jonny Wilkinson, footballers Michael Chopra and Steven Taylor and Olympic breaststroke swimmer Chris Cook.
Performance sports director Fraser Kennedy said: “This hat trick of awards is a real testament to the quality of the students we have here at Newcastle University.

“Gemma, Will and Jon all work extremely hard to be as good as they can be at their respective sports and to combine this with the demands of their studies. We are all very proud of their achievements.”

Will and Jon also recently competed in the British Swimming Championships in London. Jon made it to the semi-final of the 200 metre individual medley and the 200 metre freestyle races and scored a couple of personal best times in the process.
